Hollywood, Los Angeles - California

Has is seriously been a whole month since our mini vacation to Hollywood, California?! Where in the world has time gone?! This year is already halfway over. What the crap?

We recently took a mini vacation to Hollywood, California and it was the first official vacation with Max! And guess what? We survived sleeping in the same room! Haha. Max has slept in is own crib, in his own room since we came home from the hospital. So I'm 95% sure this was the first time sleeping in the same room as him, just shy of one year old. This doesn't include the few occasions when I fell asleep on the rocker in his nursery to make sure he actually fell asleep in his crib before I went back to my bed... I love the newborn stage, just not the sleepless nights! Anyway...back to California!

We stayed at the Highland Gardens Hotel, which was in walking distance to Hollywood Blvd (which is not really all that exciting. Just a normal road with the stars all over the place). We decided to spend a little more and stay in the suite, since it has a bedroom separate to the living room area. This was great because it allowed us to put Max down for a nap and not be stuck in the same room! It was pretty nice actually. We were also able to put him down at night and then still be able to stay up and watch a little TV or something before going to bed ourselves.

We went to eat at this place called Pig'N Whistle for dinner the first night. It sounded pretty interesting (the food was so so) and they had this photobooth there and I LOVE photobooths, so we had to take pictures while we waited for our food. What's even better is that you get the pictures emailed to you! (See them above!) On top of getting a print out with a little Pig'N Whistle logo on it. Win/Win! Pig'N Whistle is located on Hollywood Blvd, which is must see on a Hollywood vacation and within walking distance from our hotel!

One of the other things we did was went to the Griffith Observatory. Please take note that parking is TERRIBLE. Seriously the worst thing ever. We got lucky and ended up turning around after the end of the road parking (which was all taken and a very far walk) and was able to park in the actual parking lot. So just take note, if you go, keep in mind about the parking. You may want to give yourself a little extra time to drive around and find closer parking if you don't want to park a mile down the road. The observatory has lots of really pretty views! I think it would be really cool to be able to see the telescopes in action, but they are only open specific times...typically at night at we weren't staying there that long.

Do you remember the movie La La Land? One of the scenes was at the observatory. Oh how nice it would be to be there with hardly anyone there! Parking would be amazing! (Totally unrealistic...)

The obvious must see is the Hollywood Sign! It's actually pretty entertaining because of all the signs that say "No Access to the Hollywood Sign". Apparently Californians that live up near the sign hate tourists coming over there. But guess what?! Maybe you shouldn't live by this state monument! Anyway, don't even bothering google maping the sign since it will get you nowhere. The best place to view the sign is to start at Lake Hollywood Park. We scored when we got there and found parking literally directly across the street from the opening to the park! It was awesome! The park is right by a pretty steep road but you can park anywhere on that road. All the pictures below are from the park. You can get even better picture spots for the Hollywood sign by following this youtube video I found here. We just stayed at the park, played around for a bit and then left. It's also a great place for a picnic!

Next up on the docket was Santa Monica! This was Max's first time seeing the ocean! Though, he's not going to remember this at all, which mean's we will be going back to the beach within the next 2 years! It was pretty funny. He had no idea what to do with the sand. It look him a little while until he realized he could crawl on it and then he was off! We also turned our heads for literally only a few seconds and the next thing we knew and he was eating sand...

One of the days we stopped by this breakfast place called the Griddle Cafe. It's definitely a must go if you are in the area! Though, there can be a bit of a wait, but it is worth it. OH MY GOODNESS. The servings are HUGE. I mean seriously, 2 things on the menu could probably feed an entire family. I ordered some pancakes and next thing I knew I had 3 giant cakes that were overflowing off the plate. It was ridiculous! Definitely plan for leftovers and don't get the same thing as the person with you! (I failed at taking a picture of our breakfast, but there are loads of photos on yelp!)

We also had to go to the LA Zoo! It was basically right around the corner. Some of the animals were super active! Some of the monkeys were chancing each other around the enclosure. We also got to see a baby giraffe that was only two weeks old! The little thing was so cute and small! But still pretty big at the same time, but small compared to the other giraffes. We also saw two male peacocks going a little crazy at each other!

On our way home, I convinced Scott to let us stop by the LA fabric district to do a little fabric shopping. It's soooooo cheap! I wish I would have gotten just a few more pieces of fabric! I think this means I just need to go back...I could even make it a "quick" day trip! A handful of performance knits, brushed poly, liverpool. I am in love! There really are only 2 shops that are a must see, through I'm sure there are plenty others. I always find something at these places though. Angel Textiles and then another place that I can't remember the name...but it's basically right next to Angel Textiles. You could also check out Michael Levine's -The Loft. It is pretty inexpensive since they sell most of their fabric fabric by the pound, but I don't like spending time digging around. The main Michael Levine store is great! Except the prices are a little more on the pricy side, but they do have a pretty big selection. Since we were trying to spend no more than an hour at the fabric district, we weren't able to spend much time trying to explore and find other good fabric stores. Next time!

It was a pretty fun mini trip and a much needed vacation. Coming back to the Arizona heat was definitely the worst part! Why can't we have a beach in Arizona? It's too dang hot!

Cheers!

Murph 2018

Is it seriously already Memorial Day weekend?! Where has the time gone? This year is FLYING by and I'm not ready! Mainly because my little man is almost a year old and that just blows my mind. But more on that later.

With it being Memorial Day weekend, it means its time for MURPH. The MURPH is a CrossFit Hero WOD (workout of the day). Hero WOD's are created by CrossFit to honor the men and women who have fallen in the line of duty. MURPH is specifically to honor Michael Patrick "Murph" Murphy who was killed on June 29th, 2005. He was a United States Navy SEAL officer who was awarded the U.S. military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the War in Afghanistan.

People all over will participate in the MURPH at some point during the weekend. Pretty neat, huh? Now, what is this so called "Murph" that you speak of? (It's pretty terrible and supposed to be done with a weighted vest. No thanks!)

Murph
1 mile run
100 pull ups
200 push ups
300 air squats
1 mile run

This is the first year that I did the full! 2 year ago when I first started CrossFit, I did the glorified half (mile runs but half of the reps). Last year I was SUPER pregnant (8 months), so I did the real half, but my running was more like a waddle.

Since my son, Max, is just about 20 lbs, I decided I might as well do my air squats with him strapped on. Great idea, right?! It actually wasn't that bad, but 200 push ups and 300 air squats just take so long to do!

I'm pretty proud of myself and super grateful to have a body that can do so much! I was even able to convince one of my good girl friends to come do it with me! I completed the Murph in 72:25 (probably the longest workout I'll ever repeat). My first mile was about 9:15 and my last mile was about 10:15. Not terrible. I also hate cardio! 2 years ago, my first mile was 8 min and my 2nd mile was 12...haha. My consistency was much better. Hopefully, next year I'll be pregnant, so I doubt I'll end up doing the full, or maybe I will. Who knows! Maybe next year you'll even find a CrossFit gym and experience the Murph!

Get up and move! :)

Hello World!

I'd like to welcome to the world our little man Maxwell.

Isn't he the cutest?! And so much hair! ๐Ÿ˜  Can you believe it? We are parents! A whopping 8lbs 4oz and approximately 19 inches long. (They measured him at 21 1/4 inches but a few days later at his pediatrician appointment they measured 19?? So we aren't quite sure how long he really was at birth. Maybe he had a really bad cone head and it went back to normal in a few days...)

He is such a bundle of joy and the best baby we could have ever hoped for! <3

...

I started noticing what I was 75% sure were contractions around 9pm on Tuesday night. Max was my first, so I had absolutely no idea what anything was supposed to feel like, and my water didn't break at home, sooooo, yeah. I was texting my girlfriends during this time and they were pretty sure it was contractions. I tried to go to sleep but I just could not get comfortable! And I'm not used to going to sleep before 11, ha! Getting closer to 1am, Scott is starting to get ready for bed and I'm like...I think we need to go to the hospital... (I feel terrible mostly leaving him in the dark, but next baby I will be more prepared and know what's going on!) I call my Dr and he basically tells me to go to the hospital and the worst they can tell me is to go home.

BTW, for me, contractions felt almost like menstrual cramps in the lower uterus area. More of an annoying pain than anything (at least at that point in time), especially since you can't really shove your fist in your stomach to make it feel a little better...

We get to the hospital around 3am. **If you are planning on delivering a baby and it's your first, I highly suggest you get some food on the way to the hospital! The only thing they will let you eat is ice chips and they are terrible after awhile! Just don't eat a full meal or anything too heavy, in the off chance you need a C-Section.** Luckily for us, I was 6cm dilated, which means we were staying! ๐Ÿ™Œ

It took FOREVER to get out of Triage. I think somewhere around 2 hours. It was terrible and boring. You do lots of waiting and baby monitoring there. Finally, around 5 ish we got to our delivery room. I was debating going natural but then decided against it. And glad I did because it was so much more enjoyable! I was getting super irritable before the epidural. Scott probably wouldn't enjoy dealing with a monster during such a special moment.

I was not comfortable in the hospital bed AT ALL. I'm almost certain I was having some back labor or my lower back was just hurting because I couldn't sit/lay in a way for it not to. And I had to wait for the anesthesiologist, since the mom with 3+ babies was a higher priority than me...who would have thought? Good thing the best one was on the clock that morning! Totally couldn't feel any contractions with 10 minutes. Life was great! And I wasn't a monster anymore so Scott was now allowed to rub my back or my feet. I couldn't feel any contractions but I could still kind of feel my legs/feet, which probably made changing my dressings easier for the nurses. My water broke within the next 45 minutes.

My nurse had me use the peanut ball and kept rotating me every 1-1.5 hours. It wasn't very exciting. She also kept asking me if I felt any pressure, which I never did. My Dr FINALLY got there around 9 and guess what, fully dilated! Boom! If he would have stayed, I probably could have delivered Max within the hour, but my doc had one last patient that morning and his office is literally 5 minutes from the hospital, so I didn't object. Besides, I couldn't feel anything anyway.

Once the nurses got the call that my doctor was going to be there soon, they started prepping me for some pre pushing. Basically to get the baby in position so the doctor can deliver him. And guess what? Max was already crowning! That chunky monkey just slid right down my birth canal! Once my doctor got there, we got the show on the road! I pushed 4 times during each contraction and 4 contractions later...we had a baby! It was such a weird feeling having my belly huge and hard and then all of a sudden it was gone! I could see my belly button! And my belly was so squishy! Hahaha

He was perfect. <3 And still is perfect. We love him so much! And I'm so grateful for my good friend Annie who was able to capture the moment! The stars aligned and everything worked out perfect for her to be there! God is good! And my amazing husband. I love him so much! I couldn't have asked for a better man to be by my side. Our little forever family is growing!!

Cheers!

Birthday Surprise!

Ladies and gents, it's time to introduce the newest member of our family! So a little back story first. Scott and I are remodeling our house. We still have quite some time before it's finished. I've been bringing up the puppy idea to Scott off and on for quite a few months. Also, every so often we would go to the pet store to get our puppy fix! It was great. We also decided that once we finish the house, we would get a puppy. Like a little reward!

So my birthday was earlier this month. On one of our weekend excursions to HomeDepot or Lowe's, Scott tells me that... my birthday is coming up and he wanted it to be a surprise....but I should be the one to pick it out. Honestly, I had no idea what he was talking about! I mean, he totally could have been talking about fabric! (Since we all know that I need more!) And then he said I could get a little puppy! So with that, the search began!

It didn't take all too long since I found one that same day. Ha! She's perfect! Her name is Bella. A cute little ball of fluff. She was also meant to be since her birthday happens to fall on our wedding anniversary! (Fate!) She's a cute little Cockapoo (cocker spaniel/ poodle mix). It's said that she will grow up to be between 15-20 lbs, which is perfect for me! Not to tiny, but not huge either. And her coat is apricot, which is just the color I wanted in a pup! <3

House training is super fun though...Bleh! If she leaves the room you are in, she's probably looking for a place to pee. She's 12 weeks old right now though and approximately 5 lbs. Good news is, she is sleeping through the night! Cries all the time when I put her down in her kennel when I have to leave but good news! She hasn't had any accidents! (Knock on wood!!) For being so tiny, she's great at holding her little bladder. Just not so much when she can roam around the house. We make sure all the doors to carpet stay closed!

It's a fun little adventure and she should be with us for quite some time! Enjoy a few pictures of our little furbaby. This also means that it's already time to update our family photos!! Though I'm not so sure how well that would be with a kitty and a pup... <3
